Methods for Evaluating DC Arc Incident Energy in PV Systems

Renewable energy systems continue to be one of the fastest-growing segments of the energy industry. This paper focuses on the understanding of how photovoltaic (PV) technology behaves under DC arc conditions, with emphasis on the electrical safety aspect. This paper provides a comparative analysis of a proposed arc flash incident energy calculation method against different laboratory tests. DC Arc Flash Analysis software calculates the incident energy for different types of direct current applications, including mission-critical facilities, electrochemical plants, substation battery banks, photovoltaic and nuclear plants, as well as transportation systems.

Data Center Power System Expansion: DC Arc Flash Case Study

13:01 Webinars

Case study of a a power system study, which involved the replacement of an extensive UPS system at a data center. The studies included short-circuit, protective device coordination, and arc-flash hazard analysis for both the AC and DC systems consistent with the NFPA 70E 2018 and IEEE 1584 2018 Standards. The DC equipment as installed required mitigation efforts due to high incident energies. This presentation details the analysis, findings, and recommended mitigation for anyone embarking on similar retrofit or expansion studies.
