Workshop Description

The E253 Advanced Protection & Coordination Analysis Workshop is an intensive three-day hands-on training program designed for power system engineers, protection engineers, consultants, utility personnel, industrial plant engineers, and system studies professionals seeking advanced knowledge of protective device coordination and system protection using ETAP® and ETAP Star™.

This workshop provides participants with practical methodologies for performing protection and coordination studies, evaluating protective device operation, optimizing system selectivity, and analyzing advanced protection schemes. Attendees will learn how to model, analyze, validate, and optimize protection systems while ensuring equipment protection, personnel safety, and system reliability.

The course combines theoretical concepts with practical ETAP exercises covering overcurrent protection, differential protection, voltage-restrained protection, distance protection, directional relays, Zone Selective Interlocking (ZSI), automated protection evaluation, and advanced relay coordination techniques for industrial, commercial, utility, transmission, and distribution systems.

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Develop and execute comprehensive Protection & Coordination Studies using ETAP.
  • Apply industry standards and best practices for overcurrent protection.
  • Model protective devices including fuses, circuit breakers, relays, CTs, and PTs.
  • Evaluate equipment protection requirements and zones of protection.
  • Perform Time Current Coordination (TCC) analysis and device coordination studies.
  • Analyze protective device operating sequences and fault isolation strategies.
  • Design and evaluate Zone Selective Interlocking (ZSI) schemes.
  • Utilize ETAP Star™ for automated protection and coordination assessment.
  • Interpret coordination reports and graphical evaluation tools.
  • Apply differential, directional, distance, and voltage-dependent protection principles.
  • Evaluate protection system performance under multiple operating scenarios.
  • Analyze inverter-based resource impacts on protection systems. (TBD)
  • Configure and assess transmission and distribution distance protection applications.
