Webinar Description

Determining how much distributed generation resources a system can handle requires careful study. In this presentation, you’ll discover how engineers keep pace with the high demand for renewable integrations by using ETAP Feeder Hosting Capacity to optimize the placement and capacity of DERs.

Key Learning Objectives:

  • Recognize the importance of, and the limitations to isolated study of various constraints (voltage, thermal, protection, harmonic limits) in determining maximum DER penetration
  • Explore how to use ETAP to eliminate guesswork through collective analysis, by incorporating multiple feeder hosting capacity study methods and constraints
  • See how multidimensional analysis results can be used to develop strategies and provide a clear assessment for optimal DER integration
  • Get a preview of the new functionality added in ETAP 2026 for elevating accuracy by including short circuit and harmonic impact in combination with other constraints

This solution incorporates common analysis methodologies into its analysis methodology, including Nodal Hosting Capacity for location-specific limits, Stochastic Optimization for optimal placement/sizing, and Impact Analysis for dynamic system behavior.

The software walkthroughs in this presentation show how to apply key constraints to the study, including min/max voltage, thermal, protection/bus bracing (IEC vs. ANSI), and harmonic (IEEE 519).  Additionally, the presentation demonstrates how ETAP FHC can be used to understand voltage behavior dynamically as PV penetration increases through study of the buses connected to PV arrays. To verify system stability, ETAP FHC produces an impact analysis study with smart inverter control enabled. This study can be configured to use the IEEE 1547 rulebook provided in ETAP, or by defining custom control curves. The analysis results are also presented, including graphical visualizations (Plot View and Plot Analyzer) and normalized results with ETAP System Manager, which is also referred to as the FHC Viewer.

Feeder Hosting Capacity is fully integrated within ETAP Power Simulator, consistent with its other studies, enabling the customization of display settings, system alerts, and report generation. As part of the Distribution Optimization Add-On it enables the precise determination of optimal placement and maximum capacity for PV installations, ensuring a safer and more resilient transition to decentralized grids.
