Workshop Description

  • The purpose of this 4-day introductory hands-on workshop is to learn how to apply power system engineering knowledge to conduct arc-flash hazard analysis as well as to provide a refresher on modeling power systems using ETAP software.
  • This workshop provides instructions on how to apply the new IEEE 1584-2018 Standard.  An overview of the fundamental differences between IEEE 1584-2018 and 2002 methods is also provided.  The discussion includes insights into background of the model development and validation because this is essential to understand how the new AF model combines empirical and arc-flash physical behavior. The course explains how an arc-flash incident energy study should be conducted using the new arc-flash standard guidelines.
  • The course covers a few basics on arc-flash hazard assessment and the application/selection of mitigation techniques such as improved overcurrent protective device settings, differential protection, etc.
  • This course also includes a refresher on topics such as power system modeling fundamentals, equipment sizing, power flow problems, & short circuit analysis.
  • An ETAP workstation is provided for each attendee.
