Webinar Description

As underground cable installations become more complex, conventional cable derating methods can struggle to accurately address real-world conditions. Engineers need a more comprehensive approach to analysis that accounts for complex raceway geometries, duct banks, backfills, boundary conditions, and thermal interactions.

Join this webinar to discover how ETAP Underground Raceway Systems (UGS) and the new UGS FEM capability in ETAP 2026 extends cable ampacity analysis beyond the practical limitations of conventional methods, helping engineers evaluate cable installations with greater confidence and accuracy.

Key Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the critical challenges to cable ampacity and derating studies, and the limitations of conventional analytical methods
  • Learn the new capabilities provided in ETAP UGS FEM to model real-world cable systems, raceways, conduits, backfills, and thermal boundary conditions without relying on configuration-specific assumptions
  • See how to apply ETAP UGS to your projects through a software demonstration of system modeling, study execution, temperature visualization, and detailed reporting for underground cable systems

Whether developing an electrical system for a petroleum refinery, data center, or manufacturing plant, designing a substation for a solar power plant in a hot desert, or engineering an HVDC offshore wind substation, engineers must ensure that the cable system is designed to keep the conductor temperature within the allowable operating limits, under the expected operating conditions, installation configuration, and the surrounding environmental constraints.

Conventional methods such as Neher-McGrath and IEC 60287 have been used widely to address the cable ampacity problem. However, increasing complexity of modern cable installations and limitations of standard analytical methods can make these approaches less effective, and sometime may lead to conservative designs and unnecessary costs.

ETAP Underground Raceway Systems Finite Element Method (UGS FEM) is a comprehensive numerical tool designed to calculate the steady-state temperature profile throughout the entire region of cable systems in duct banks or in direct buried configurations.

This webinar provides a high-level introduction to UGS FEM and explores how the new tool can be used to address the cable derating study beyond the limitations of standard methods.

Who should attend

This webinar is designed for engineering professionals involved in the design, analysis, specification, and operation of underground power cable systems, including:

  • Power System Engineers responsible for cable ampacity, thermal performance, load capacity, and cable derating studies for utility, industrial, renewable energy, and infrastructure projects
  • Electrical Design Engineers who need to evaluate underground cable installations, duct banks, conduits, raceways, and direct-buried systems while ensuring compliance with temperature and ampacity requirements
  • Consulting Engineers and EPC Firms seeking more accurate methods to assess complex cable configurations that extend beyond the assumptions of traditional analytical approaches such as IEC 60287 and Neher-McGrath
  • Utility Transmission and Distribution Engineers involved in planning, upgrading, or validating underground cable networks where thermal interactions, backfills, and non-standard installations can significantly impact cable ratings
  • Industrial Facility and Data Center Engineers responsible for high-capacity cable systems where maximizing cable utilization while maintaining safe operating temperatures is critical
  • Renewable Energy and Infrastructure Project Engineers designing cable systems for solar, wind, battery energy storage, transportation, and other large-scale electrification projects with challenging installation environments
  • Engineering Managers and Technical Decision-Makers evaluating advanced modeling tools to improve the accuracy, efficiency, and confidence of cable ampacity studies

Whether you currently rely on conventional cable derating methods or are looking for a practical way to analyze installations that fall outside the scope of standard approaches, this webinar will demonstrate how ETAP UGS FEM provides a unified framework for both standard and highly complex underground cable systems.
