Webinar Description

Excessive harmonic distortions in the evolving grid landscape can contribute to reduced equipment lifespan, poor efficiency, and potential failures. Attend this webinar to learn how ETAP incorporates advanced harmonics analysis tools and the latest compliance standards to help engineers address power quality challenges to improve system performance.

Key Learning Objectives

  • Recognize the key challenges related to harmonic distortion, particularly with the integration of IBRs, DERs, and EV charging infrastructure
  • Explore how balanced and unbalanced harmonic analysis can be used to improve system reliability and ensure compliance with relevant industry standards
  • Learn the enhancements and unique features within ETAP that simplify harmonic analyses through digital twin technology and revealing visualizations

The webinar includes an interactive Q&A session with our experts to address your specific challenges and requirements. This topic was initially presented at the Spark 2024 Global Digital Conference. By popular demand, it is being presented as a webinar.

Harmonic analysis is essential to prevent equipment failures, by assessing harmonic distortions and their impact, including derating requirements. It also assesses equipment overloading for devices such as transformers, capacitors, and cables in both balanced and unbalanced networks. This presentation highlights several enhancements to power quality modules in ETAP2024 designed to reduce study time using its unified electrical digital twin technology. As well, the presentation discusses the updates to its comprehensive array of rulebooks, which include limits based on several international standards for compliance evaluation.

  • ETAP’s Harmonic Analysis provides rulebooks, analysis and simulation for compliance with IEEE Standards 1547 and 2800 for current distortion limits for facilities with Inverter-Based Resources (IBRs) and Distributed Energy Resources (DERs).
  • Unbalanced Harmonic Analysis has been enhanced to include unified AC and DC unsymmetrical system power flow, to enable comparisons between multiple unbalanced load flow scenarios. Protective device overload alerts are now visible on both the one-line diagram and in an alert view panel. The load flow algorithm was also enhanced for easier convergence with special systems.
  • New to ETAP 2024 is the Unbalanced Network Frequency Scan, which helps to evaluate derating limits for 3-phase and 1-phase equipment and locate possible resonant conditions in the network using phase and sequence harmonic frequency impedance plots. Short and long line modeling, skin effect, harmonic distortion limits evaluation per phase, and plots per phase are provided.
  • A unique feature for these ETAP power quality modules are the interactive sliders and visualizers. The harmonic sliders make analysis at different harmonic frequencies simple and efficient.  The unbalanced harmonic waveform and vector visualizer facilitates simulation of ‘what if’ scenarios, with animations and modifiable display settings.

ETAP power quality modules serve as efficient tools to address industry challenges by simplifying and optimizing the analysis process.
