T&D Protection & Coordination Software
Faulted circuit indicators (FCIs) are used in today’s distribution systems to locate the faulted section of the feeder and thereby achieving faster restoration and minimal loss of service. In recent years, thanks to the advancement in wireless communication technologies, it is now possible to wirelessly transmit FCI’s signal to the upstream recloser within a time range of a power system cycle. This has enabled several new applications of FCIs with high speed wireless communication capability to enhance distribution protection schemes. These new applications can reduce fault clearing time and momentary loss of service while still keeping the system coordination and increasing the reliability of the distribution protection system and quality of service.

Full range reactive power support is available in case of electronically-coupled generation sources such as wind turbine generation (WTG) types 3 and 4. If WTG active power generation is less than its auxiliary power while WTG absorbs inductive reactive power from the system, the current angle measured by the directional element resembles a current angle occurring during forward fault as observed by the collector protection relay. This may lead to a false trip and loss of wind power generation. In this webinar, challenges of directional protection of wind farm collectors will be demonstrated. ETAP StarZ™ – Protection & Coordination module will be utilized to set and analyze directional overcurrent protection of wind power plant collectors. Finally, a few solutions offered by the industry will be presented and evaluated.
