How is ETAP Used to Manage the Distribution System for the Tabuk region on the Red Sea

This case study, which provides a brief introduction to the TDMS system application, offers something new and valuable to everyone from the perspective of EPC. We designed this project to support the region's growing population and economic activities, thereby driving economic growth and enhancing the quality of life. Sustainability and efficiency are the primary targets of the product, which aims to harness renewable energy sources and implement advanced technologies to ensure both environmental sustainability and operational efficiency.
by Ms. Haishan Wang, SEPCOIII

In 2019, SEPCOIII was chosen as the EPC contractor for the large-scale Tidia Entertainment City project in Saudi Arabia. The project spans approximately 28,000 square kilometers, encompassing lands, islands, beaches, deserts, mountains, and volcanic areas. This luxury tourism development project in Tabuk Province, Saudi Arabia, aims to create a high-end destination offering unparalleled marine and environmental attractions for Red Sea tourism. Learn how SEPCOIII relied on ETAP's Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS) to assist with the technology challenges for the project’s distributed energy power system and how the solution is used to manage and supervise the power distribution system to achieve better optimizations and improve system stability.

Real-time electric power monitoring

Challenges

  • The project is vast in scale, encompassing multiple renewable energy sources and networks. Its goal is to enable real-time electric power management and monitoring. The initiative also aims to enhance support for large power grids by incorporating variable distribution parameters and coordinating multiple energy sources.
  • Key objectives include optimizing operations, improving visualization, and refining asset management across complex electrical networks. A crucial challenge is implementing real-time monitoring that minimizes the need for maintenance and site visits, streamlines workflows and centralizes the management of work orders.
  • Additionally, integrating large volumes of local asset data into a unified database with robust data protection measures is essential. The user platform and associated dashboards should be seamlessly integrated with real-time data from the field, utilizing predictive analytics and event forecasting to support informed decision-making.

Which solutions did they choose?

Selected applications

They chose ETAP, a comprehensive, turnkey real-time solution for centralized and remote network operations and management based on the electrical network's digital twin model, to create a Transmission Distribution Management System (TDMS). ETAP software manages all process stages, from design to build and operation.

Sepco choose the city-scale Microgrid management solution proposed by ETAP: ETAP Digital Twin Modeling, ETAP SCADA, ETAP Power Management System, ETAP operator Training Simulator, ETAP Protection Asset Management, ETAP Arc Flash, ETAP Protection and Coordination, ETAP Power Flow, ETAP Distribution Network Analysis, ETAP Intelligent load Shedding, ETAP Microgrid, ETAP Mobile APP, ETAP NetPM. They choose all the applications for planning, designing, modeling, and operating with geospatial visualization.

Why do they use ETAP?

Main Customer Benefits

  • Real-time power managing, monitoring, and visibility of the large-scale electrical network with microgrids and solar based on digital modeling.
  • Actual electrical information about the network and assets with easy accessibility, analysis, and maintenance prediction.
  • Clear project execution procedure from planning, user requirements, system design, integration on site, tests, site acceptance, start-up, and user training.
  • The ETAP TDMS system offers substantial cost savings by significantly reducing the need for on-site visits and maintenance in remote locations, making it a financially prudent investment.

What do they think about ETAP?

Opinions

The objectives of ETAP TDMS are to provide a shared network model and a common user experience for all rules required to monitor, control, and optimize the secure operation of the electrical distribution network, thereby maximizing reliability and allowing users to benefit from cost optimization. For example, TDMS can significantly reduce the size of the operations team, resulting in substantial savings on operating costs. In this project, the ETF TDMS system shows excellent ability and performance in the control system.
