Webinar Description

Faulted circuit indicators (FCIs) are used in today’s distribution systems to locate the faulted section of the feeder and thereby achieving faster restoration and minimal loss of service. In recent years, thanks to the advancement in wireless communication technologies, it is now possible to wirelessly transmit FCI’s signal to the upstream recloser within a time range of a power system cycle. This has enabled several new applications of FCIs with high speed wireless communication capability to enhance distribution protection schemes. These new applications can reduce fault clearing time and momentary loss of service while still keeping the system coordination and increasing the reliability of the distribution protection system and quality of service.

This webinar presents the process of modeling, simulation and protection & coordination study of distribution feeders equipped with fault circuit indicators in ETAP. Four applications, where the device fault clearing time can be reduced using wireless protection sensor (WPS) signal, will be studied:

  • Switching from a fuse-saving scheme to a fuse-blowing scheme in case of a permanent fault downstream of fuse
  • Enhancing fuse-blowing scheme to accelerate fault clearance in case of a fault upstream of fuse
  • Permit recloser fast curve to trip for faults within unfused sections of the feeder
Using multiple time current characteristic (TCC) curves to adaptively coordinate recloser with downstream fuses with different ratings

The webinar broadcast starts at 9:00 AM, Pacific Daylight Time (PDT).
