UG SoCal

Transient Arc Current & Incident Energy Modeling Considerations

Evening
Jul 18, 2017
Irvine, United States

The SoCal ETAP User Group will meet at the ETAP Learning Center in Irvine, CA

User Group Description

  • Social (5:30 pm): Welcome & Introductions - Snacks & refreshments will be provided.

  • Presentation (6:00 pm):  The behavior of the arc current as a function of time is a complex physical phenomena which is still being researched and implemented in new models for upcoming IEEE standards such as IEEE P1584. Along with the complexity of the fault current model, the transient fault current behavior of a power system brings additional complexity and challenges in the determination of the fault clearing time.

This presentation covers the engineering background behind the “Fault Current Decay Method” and the “Incident Energy Subtraction” methodology with application examples for industrial and generation systems.

The presentation has an emphasis on how to apply the different ETAP arc flash tools for different types of systems in order to capture the most accurate transient arc fault current and energy results.

  • Open Discussion

Presenters:

  • Raghu Veeraraghavan
    Safety Division General Test Manager
    DC Arc Flash Product Manager

  • Albert Marroquin, PE
