Smart Grid Security - Communication Protocols

Smart Grid Security - Communication Protocols | ETAP
There is a wide variety of network adapters available to support networking of applications. ETAP Smart Grid supports all standard network protocols including MMS, ModBus, DNP, ICCP, NetBeui, T103, NetDDE, UCA, IPX/SPX, and TCP/IP via OPC (OLE for Process Control) interface. In addition, ETAP can be set up to retrieve data from any process information database or historian.

ETAP Smart Grid also supports the management and transparent integration of legacy applications and databases in the electric utility control center environment.

IEC 61850 Substation Protocol

IEC 61850 is a migration from the analog world to the digital world for substation that allows for multi-vendor interoperability. ETAP Smart Grid Solution provides IEC61850 enabled secure substation network communication capabilities for our next generation substations. Some of the benefits of using IEC 61850 enable smart grid solution are:

  • Data from IEDs available to all applications such as OMS and AMR via network
  • Applications such as OMS and AMR access data independently
  • Communication path unaffected when adding field devices or ETAP consoles
  • Standardization of data names
  • Creation of a comprehensive set of services
  • Implementation over standard protocols and hardware
  • Definition of a process bus
