Newmont Mining Corporation has approved and is in the implementation
stage of an enhanced load shedding protection scheme using ETAP
Intelligent Load Shedding software. This protection will utilize
an exclusive technology developed by Operation Technology, Inc.
to enhance the critical load preservation of the electrical system
in case of generator tripping.
The ETAP
Intelligent Load Shedding (ILS) module uses a neural network
to dynamically determine the best load shedding priority. The
decision is made based on the actual operating conditions of
the system and location of the disturbance. ILS provides faster
execution of load shedding, as compared to conventional frequency
relays thus further reducing the load relief requirements.
The project is scheduled to be completed by
the middle of 2004.
