ETAP® Southern California User Group
Grounding of Low-Voltage Systems

Irvine, California
November 13, 2012

Benefits of Attending:
  • Technical presentation by an ETAP engineer
  • Network and exchange ideas with other ETAP users
  • Upcoming enhancements and new features
  • Discuss engineering issues and solutions
  • Learn new tips and techniques
  • Increase efficiency and productivity with new skills

Description:   This user group covers two important topics relevant for safety of persons: Protective Conductors (PE) thermal sizing and Electric Shock calculation in Low-Voltage Systems.

Thermal sizing of protective grounding conductors on the technical standards NFPA 70- NEC, BS 7671 and IEC 60364-5-54. The sizing parameters are the calculated, or user-defined, ground fault currents, as well as actual fault clearing times of protective devices.

ETAP also allows leakage currents of equipment, flowing permanently through the protective grounding conductors and possibly exceeding 10 mA, to be taken into account to establish the minimum size of PEs. ETAP bases the Electric Shock calculations on the technical standards BS 7671, IEC 60364-4-41, and EN 50122. Electric Shock calculations depend on the earthing / grounding type adopted within the facility or for the residential unit, namely: TN-C, TN-S, TN-C-S, TT, and IT. All the information on how ETAP handles these earthing / grounding types will be provided.

ETAP 12 new low-voltage system features & capabilities will also be presented:
  • Enhanced Reporting
  • Cable Manager Tool
  • Automatic Cable Sequence Impedance Determination
  • System Grounding Checking
  • Cable Armor & Sheath Thermal Withstand Checking
  • Cable Sizing
  • Ground Conductor Sizing
  • Electric Shock Calculation
  • GFCI Handling
  • Compliance with NEC, IEC 60364, BS 7671
