Students at Buffalo State University Show Satisfaction with ETAP

ETAP was recently used for many projects in the Power Center for Utility Exploration at Buffalo State University. Students calculated short circuit currents at different buses by hand (pu method & flat start) and then ran simulations using Power World and ETAP.

The majority of students chose ETAP due to its user-friendly interface which was reported easy for them to master. They quickly learned (on their own) how to input data and adjusted them to match parameters from the assignment as they were different from the default values in ETAP. The students stated that they appreciated the comprehensive reporting capabilities that ETAP provided them.

How can you create better electrical distribution systems for mines?

by ETAP5. September 2013 10:41

Powering the Mine

Mining is a very CAPEX-intensive industry. Large investments are made in very remote areas and often deep in the ground to win the materials. This drives the cost of equipment and labor up, making it imperative that miners seek effective ways to reduce development and operating costs. A particular focus is to reduce on-site labor and to rely more on remote support and even remote operating teams without sacrificing operational efficiency and plant availability.

The mining industry has seen enormous growth over the last few years due to an increased demand for minerals from booming economies such as China and India. Even now that the global economy has cooled down a little, the demand for the resources remains high, keeping commodity prices at healthy levels.

SmartPlant Electrical and ETAP offer a unique solution for the mining industry with engineering, design, validation of data, construction support, commissioning, and operations. Read the Powering the Mine white paper focusing on the electrical distribution system for mines.

Electrical systems are absolutely important in these installations, with demanding availability criteria of typically 99.8 percent. Electrical system breakdowns will immediately stop production, incurring huge costs and possibly endangering personnel.

A well-designed, well-maintained, and clearly documented electrical design is not only imperative for reasons of safety and cost, but it regulatory requirements typically specify that the electrical system is up-to-date. So designing a robust system using fully integrated tools to provide operational flexibility, reliability, and safety is essential. The system is then used to monitor and maintain the facility and provide for sustainable and safe operation throughout the life cycle of the electrical distribution system. Learn more.
